I still have lots to learn.

Today I played with the oAuth Twitter authentication. I can get it to put up the Twitter page but not sure how to use the return authentication. So I’ve put that on the back burner for now. I’ll get back to it later in the week.

I’ve got the database setup and gathering

March 30, 2009 at 7:34 pm | Posted in Skillzdesk | Leave a comment

Today I transfered my local test database to the site database. It was pretty trivial using the phpMyAdmin web interface export and import. I also set up a cron job to run to do the data collection. My only complaint is that the Godaddy cron interface will not let me run the collector more then twice per hour.

I’ve got the web hosting all set.

I connected my website registration to my son’s web hosting today and with both of them being on Godaddy it was really easy. I just called them up and the customer service guy walked me thru the whole procedure. Now I’m just waiting for the site to be transfered to a SSH secured server so I can ssh into it do I can start a cron job to gather the needed data.

I wish I had found this a week ago.

After spending a week working with PHP I’ve found a couple sites that have really helped me. The Theme Forest and Net Tuts+ are a couple sites that have screencasts. So I spent the last couple days watching the “Diving into PHP” and the “Jquery For Absolute Beginners” series. They really explained alot and are recommended.

Trying to grok the flow

I’ve been working on learning PHP and Javascript. Being a C++ and Visual Basic programmer for the last 20 or so years I’m having a problem to GROK the web programing. It doesn’t seem to have the linear flow I’m used to. I guess I need to find a good reference for the flow of html and PHP.

Playing with Javascript

I’m trying to decide if I want to use javascript or to keep it simply PHP.  I’ve been looking at the jQuery library and it seems to be robust.  I’ve got some reading to do to get my head around the way they all work together.  As I get into the development my ‘todo’ list just k eeps growing but I hope to have a featureless prototype ready by the end of the month.

Good news on the Hosting

March 19, 2009 at 4:11 pm | Posted in Skillzdesk | Leave a comment

My son had bought 3 years of hosting but never really did anything with the site.  I took a look at what the host had to offer and it’s linux based and has access to a mySQL server which is what I’m using for my development.  So I’m taking of over the hosting account.  This is perfect for my needs and because of low funds it works with my budget.

Thanks Bub.

I’ve been working on my Site

Now I’m starting on the user forward interface. I’ve been using the Eclipse PDT IDE. It seems powerful and the Zend debugger has served it’s purpose.now that I’ve set the editor to emulate EMACS I’m happy with it. I really like PHP. I’ve gotten the backend data collection part of the site working now.

Well it’s been almost a month since I got my hours cut by 2/3rd. I’ve posted my resume to the usually places but only seem to get calls from companies that are looking to sell financial advice. I am working on an idea for a new web site. So between job apps and my current clients I’m working on the site. Who knows maybe it will be the next “BIG THING”.
